Challock - Pilgrim's Way - Charing
Challock is located only 10 minutes away from
the M2, Jct 6 toward Ashford or can be accessed from Jct 9 of the M20.
The proposed route starts from King's woods
car park, just outside Challock.
This route is a mixture of off-road and quiet roads. This is a nice introduction
to off road cycling as there is no major difficulties.Beware as the
pilgrim's way can get slippery and hard going when wet.
After a quick ride
in King's Wood, cross the A252 toward Howlett's farm. After crossing
the A251 at Pested Farm, the bridleway gets really rocky on the downhill
section. On joining the road, straight ahead and follow the lane to
heel farm. The bridleway is not easy to find but go across the farm
and along the field. Cross the road and follow the bridleway up to
woodsell then toward Cornhill farm. On joining the road, turn right
and follow it up to Riggshill farm. Turn left onto the bridleway. At
the bridleway junction, keep left. Turn right on the road for 800m
and left at waterditch farm.
The track steepens
rapidly, so be careful as it is often use by horses. This very fast
downhill ends brutally onto the Pilgrim's way, so make sure you stop
before going OTB into the bushes. At the T junction, turn left and
enjoy the fast rolling North Downs Way to Charing Hill. Cross the main
road (A252) and follow it until Burnt House Farm, just before the quarry.
This is the toughest part of the ride with a steep climb in the woods
toward and along the gliding field. After passing the gliding club,
you reach the A252 again. Turn left and follow the main road to Challock
and back to the car park
This is also a good warm up for a longer route
where you follow the NDW all the way to Wye and carry onto the Chilham
route (45/50 miles).
